  • Beechworth’s sophisticated shopping street has earned a reputation among retailers of being (arguably) “the best shopping street in rural Australia”. No neon signs, franchise shops, pokies or video game stores in this street. Parking is convenient and the street is pleasantly shaded by generous verandahs while the sidewalks are planted with big tubs of colourful shrubs and trees. It is clear that Beechworth nurtures great civic pride.

This beautifully preserved Victorian street offers stylish boutiques selling high quality clothing sourced nationally and internationally (including merino mink, alpaca and other woollen products), homewares, giftware, books, earthy cafes, edgy wine bars, pubs, sweet and chocolate shops, ice-creams and gelato, many specialty food shops with a good range of locally grown and/ or made artisan wares that you would not find elsewhere.

The Bourke Museum offers fascinating stories and evidence of the past including one of the best collections of the history of Ned Kelly who travelled these rocky hills and was finally imprisoned in Beechworth Gaol. Other aspects of natural and cultural history of this region are also beautifully documented in the museum.

There are daily tours of the Victorian past led by people dressed in colonial costume. They walk you through the streets, telling the stories of life that took place here along the way. Mayday Hills, an extensive Victorian asylum set in magnificent gardens at the top of Beechworth is the scene of ghost tours and tree walks.
